Today is the first day that I am working on the Twoler Studentship, and with it comes the first steps of realising my ideas.

The first idea that I will be working on is an extension of a physical-digital interface that I used as part of my final major project for Graphic Information Design.

The system uses RFID sensors and tags to record an individuals presence at specific locations. I would like to implement elements of this system within the context of the library environment.

I will now look the feasibility of incorporating RFID tags into student ID cards. By doing so students will be provided with a universal access device from which they can gain access to multiple systems to increase efficiency around campus.

1 – One such system will consist of placing sensors next to specific magazines/sections, the user can, through proximity, record their interest in a given magazine/book and subscribe to updates received via RSS feeds.

2 – Another simple use could be as a replacement to password entry to computer systems. Each computer can be connected to a sensor, and as the student places the card near the sensor, their account information is retrieved without the need for traditional ‘logging on’.

3 – By combining the RFID technology with existing library technlogy, users will be able to check out books simply by walking out. The system will detect users with books and create an event entry.

RSS feeds will then update users of the books they possess, provide information about copyrights etc.. for essay purposes, and provide information about related reading material, as well as notifications/countdowns of return times.

Upon return, the books are detected when deposited within the drop-boxes. A record of books borrowed is retained for future information.
